In last few weeks, we shared our pick’s of 9 Premium WordPress Themes for Business and Corporate from TemplateMonster. Recently, we did a page loading speed test for these 9 Premium WordPress theme demo sites using Google Lighthouse for Mobile and Desktop, Pingdom and GTMetrix.

How did we test?

For Pingdom and GTMetrix, the tests are quite straightforward. We basically just copy and paste the demo sites URL into the website and run the test. For Pingdom, we tested them using the Asia-Japan-Tokyo server, while for GTMetrix, the test server was from Vancouver, Canada using Chrome (Desktop) version 62.0.3202.94 and PageSpeed 1.15-gt1.2.

For Google Lighthouse or PageSpeed Insight, we did not test using the website. But, we did the test using the Chrome browser Version 73.0.3683.103 (Official Build) (64-bit) built-in developer tool in incognito mode with Lighthouse 4.0.0. The test runtime settings are shown as follows,

  • Device: Emulated Nexus 5X
  • Network throttling: Provided by environment
  • CPU throttling: Provided by environment
  • User agent (host): Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/73.0.3683.103 Safari/537.36
  • User agent (network): Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 6.0.1; Nexus 5 Build/MRA58N) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/71.0.3559.0 Mobile Safari/537.36

Pingdom Test Results

From the Pingdom test results in the table below, we can see that 24.Storycle scored the lowest performance point of 64, while BeClinic scored the highest performance point of 73. None of the themes was able to score the A rating from Pindom test. I am not sure how the Pingdom test was carried out from the server side. There are probably some other factor that affect the result here.

WP Theme NamesLoad time (sec)Size (MB)RequestPerformance
Monstroid2 4.1727.713167

From the test, we can see that it is not necessary that the smaller size of your webpage, the faster it will be loaded or scored higher performance point. Worth to mention, AlphenHouse demo site is 1.8 MB and was managed to be loaded in 2.11 seconds. In contrast, BeClinic with 1.7 MB took 8.34 seconds to be loaded.

If we look into the site URLs below, we can see that all demo sites are probably hosted on the same servers, except the AlphenHouse. But the weird thing is, Monstroid2 with the largest size of 27.7 MB was actually loaded in 4.17 seconds only. That is totally quite impressive. I have no clue how did it happen. Even the number of requests was unable to show a proper trend with the loading time.

If you know what is happening here, please leave your comment and let me know. Thanks!

GTMetrix and Lighthouse Test Results

For GTMetrix test, the ranking is shown in the list below from the highest to the lowest performance.

  1. Prognes
  2. AlpenHouse
  3. BuildWall
  4. BeClinic
  5. Imperion
  6. Prioris
  7. ITImex
  8. 24.Storycle
  9. Monstroid2

Prognes had the highest performance point of 82, while Monstroid2 was able to score 17 only. AlpenHouse was able to score more than 80 in the GTMetrix test, and following by the BuildWall, which is very close to 80’s borderline.

Anyway, If we try to put all the performance points for each of the themes into a comparison graph, we probably can get some trends here.

From the graph, we can see that Prognes, AlpenHouse and ITImex are able to score a very high-performance score above 90 with LightHouse.

Final thought

Overall, I think we can conclude that Prognes and AlpheHouse are the best fast loading themes. On the other hand, Monstroid2 and 24.Storycle are the lowest performance themes.
